Katie Leigh Hernandez
Studio Assistant
Katie Leigh is a South Texas artist born and raised in Harlingen, where she developed an early habit of turning just about anything into a creative project. Drawn to making things by hand, she eventually found her way to Texas State University in San Marcos, where she pursued a BFA in Drawing and discovered a love for charcoal, collage, and the stories hidden inside everyday objects.
Katie is fascinated by the things people leave behind. Old photographs, scraps of paper, forgotten trinkets, ticket stubs, and other bits of ephemera often find their way into her work. Through drawing and mixed media collage, she explores themes of memory, grief, nostalgia, and faith, treating art as a way to preserve moments that might otherwise slip away.
Curiosity is at the heart of everything Katie does. From gallery work and art education to mosaic murals at The Mosaic Workshop, she is constantly collecting new skills and creative interests. Clay sculpting, paper mâché, jewelry-making, junk journaling, and handmade gifts are just a few of her many artistic adventures. If there's a DIY project involved, chances are she's already halfway through it.
Outside the studio, Katie enjoys thrifting for hidden treasures, filming mini vlogs, writing, learning the ukulele, and traveling with her mom and sister. Whether she's exploring a new country, starting another craft project, or hunting for the perfect secondhand find, she approaches life with optimism, creativity, and a genuine appreciation for the beauty tucked away in unexpected places.
