The Mosaic Workshop partnered with TurningArt to translate original artwork by Dallas-based artists Patricia Rodriguez and JD Moore into large-scale permanent mosaic installations for the new Hutchins City Hall. A third mosaic features an original abstract design by The Mosaic Workshop owner J Muzacz.
Working closely with the artists, project managers with TurningArt, and other project stakeholders with the City of Hutchins, our team adapted the original artwork for fabrication in mosaic while maintaining each artist’s distinct visual language and intent. Translating artwork from one medium into another requires careful consideration of scale, color, material, composition, and how the image will ultimately read across a large architectural surface. Our fabrication team brought that technical expertise to the project while keeping the artists’ original work at the center of the process.
Original Design
Pixel Mosaic Adaptation
All three mosaics were fabricated in-house at The Mosaic Workshop’s East Austin studio. Over the course of four months, our team managed the fabrication process from artwork adaptation and material selection through cutting, placement, and finishing, working with thousands of individual pieces of glass tile to produce three large-scale installations.
Our team of experienced mosaic installers worked closely with the construction team to coordinate installation at the new build of the City Hall building. Our installation materials and methods appropriate for a permanent architectural application, with careful attention to substrate preparation, adhesion, expansion, and long-term durability. The goal was not simply to complete the installation, but to ensure these mosaics are built to remain part of the building for generations.
Artist collaboration is an important part of our studio practice. We regularly work with illustrators, painters, muralists, designers, and other artists to translate their work into mosaic. Each collaboration requires a different approach, and our role is to bring the technical knowledge of the medium while respecting the original artist’s vision.
This project was a great example of that process, bringing together the local artists, TurningArt’s project management team, city stakeholders, and our fabrication team to create three distinct works of permanent public art.
