Cristell Vargas
Studio Assistant
Cristell Vargas is a Dominican-American fiber artist originally from the Bronx, New York. She is now based in Austin, TX and has explored multiple mediums from sewing and soap making to preserved flower jewelry. Through this exploration, she discovered fiber arts, which became her primary medium.
Much of Cristell’s work begins with discarded and fast fashion textiles, which she transforms into sculptural forms through layering, stitching, burning, and melting. Her pieces are inspired by her experience as a first-generation Dominican American, where she explores themes of identity, femininity, and culture.
Cristell is especially drawn to the space between traditional craft and contemporary sculpture, where something discarded can become a unique and eye-catching piece of art.
Outside the studio, Cristell can usually be found sewing, experimenting with another hands-on craft, or counting down the days until her favorite time of year: Halloween!
